What are Super Bowl squares?
Super Bowl squares is a pool where nobody needs to know anything about football. A grid of 100 squares is drawn up with one team across the top and the other down the side. Everyone claims squares, then random numbers from 0 to 9 are assigned to the rows and columns. At the end of each quarter, the last digit of each team's score picks a square, and whoever's name is in it wins that quarter. It works for a big party because everyone has a reason to watch every score, whoever they are rooting for.
How to run a Super Bowl squares pool online
- Make the board. Pick the Super Bowl from the game list (or choose the two teams), add a price per square if you play for money, and give it a title.
- Share one link. Post it in the group chat, the family text or the office channel. Everyone taps the squares they want and types a name. Nobody has to sign up.
- Fill the board. Set a deadline, such as the Friday before the game. The host panel shows who has claimed what and who has paid.
- Draw the numbers. Once every square is claimed, tap Randomize Numbers before kickoff. The numbers are drawn once, so nobody can redo them.
- Watch the game. After each quarter the winning square is highlighted. With live scoring, the score, the quarter results and every scoring play fill in by themselves.
How much should a Super Bowl square cost?
That is up to your group. Many groups choose somewhere between $5 and $20 a square, and plenty play for no money at all, for a trophy, a gift card or the bragging rights. Whatever you pick, the payout calculator works out the pot and what each quarter pays, and the host panel does the same sums on your board. SquaresBets never holds anyone's money: you collect from the group and pay the winners yourselves.
Common Super Bowl payouts
- 25 / 25 / 25 / 25. Every quarter and the final pays the same.
- 20 / 20 / 20 / 40. The final pays double, so the last score matters most.
- 20 / 30 / 20 / 30. Halftime and the final pay the most.
Tips for a smooth Super Bowl pool
- Start early. A week before the game gives everyone time to claim squares and pay.
- Put the rules in the board's host note: payouts, overtime and when the numbers will be drawn.
- For a small group, make a 25-square board (5 by 5), where each row and column covers a pair of digits.
- Play for fun and follow the laws and any rules that apply where you live and where you play.
- Not everyone near a screen? Print a free squares sheet for the party.
Common questions
How do Super Bowl squares work?
A 10 by 10 grid of 100 squares is filled in with names. Random numbers from 0 to 9 are then drawn for each row and each column, one set for each team. After each quarter, the last digit of each team's score points to one square, and the person whose name is in it wins that quarter's prize.
When do you draw the numbers for Super Bowl squares?
Only after every square has been claimed, and before kickoff. Drawing the numbers last is what makes the pool fair, because nobody can pick squares based on the numbers. SquaresBets draws them for you with one tap, and only once.
Can I run Super Bowl squares online for free?
Yes. Making a board is free, and your friends don't need an account or an app, just your link. Automatic live scoring for the game is optional and costs $1.99 per board. Without it, you enter the score after each quarter.
Is there a printable Super Bowl squares sheet?
Yes. The free printable squares sheet makes a 100-square or 25-square grid with boxes for the numbers and a table for the winners and prizes. You can draw the numbers on the page and print it.
Does overtime count in Super Bowl squares?
On SquaresBets the final result is the score at the end of the game, including overtime, so the last prize goes to the square for the final score. Tell your group that before kickoff.
