How the winning square is found
On a squares board every row and column has a digit from 0 to 9. At the end of each quarter, look at the score on the scoreboard and take the last digit of each team's score. Find the away team's digit down the side and the home team's digit across the top. Whoever owns the square where the two meet wins that quarter.
For example, if the score is 17 to 13, the digits are 7 and 3. The winning square is where the 7 row meets the 3 column. A few moments later, if the score becomes 20 to 13, it is the 0 row and the 3 column instead.
The four results
Most pools pay four times a game: the end of the 1st quarter, halftime, the end of the 3rd quarter, and the final score (including overtime). Use the calculator once per result. If you need to work out the prizes, try the payout calculator.
Want this done automatically? A SquaresBets board finds the winner of every quarter for you and highlights the winning square, and with live scoring it follows the real game without anyone typing in a score.
Common questions
How do I find the winning square in football squares?
Take the last digit of each team's score. Find the away team's digit on the side of the board and the home team's digit across the top. The square where that row and column meet is the winner for that quarter.
Which team is the row and which is the column?
It depends on how your board was set up. On SquaresBets the away team runs down the side (the rows) and the home team runs across the top (the columns). If your board is the other way around, just swap the two digits.
What if a score is 10 or more?
Only the last digit counts, so 17 is a 7, 20 is a 0 and 31 is a 1.
How does the winner work on a 5 by 5 board?
Each row and column covers a pair of digits: 0 and 5, 1 and 6, 2 and 7, 3 and 8, 4 and 9. A score of 17 ends in 7, so it points to the 2/7 row or column. Choose 25 squares in the calculator and it shows the pair.
Does overtime count?
In most pools the final result is the score at the end of the game, including overtime, so the overtime score decides the last winner. Agree this with your group before kickoff.
Should I use the running score or the points in that quarter?
Use the running score: the total on the scoreboard at the end of each quarter, not just the points scored in that quarter.
