How college football squares work

A grid of 100 squares is drawn up with one team across the top and the other down the side. Everyone claims squares, then random numbers from 0 to 9 are assigned to the rows and columns. After each quarter, the last digit of each team's score picks one square, and whoever's name is in it wins that quarter. If the score is 27 to 14, the winning square is the one under 7 for one team and beside 4 for the other.

How to run a college football pool online

  1. Pick the game. Choose College, then Football, and tap the game you want. Search works by team or mascot, so "buckeyes" finds Ohio State.
  2. Share the link. Post it in the group chat, the tailgate thread or the dorm. Everyone taps the squares they want and types a name. No sign-up.
  3. Draw the numbers. Once the squares are claimed, tap Randomize Numbers before kickoff, so nobody can pick squares based on the numbers.
  4. Watch the game. After each quarter, the host types in the score and the winning square is highlighted, with each quarter's payout worked out for you.

Good games for a squares pool

  • Rivalry games, where the whole group has a reason to watch.
  • Your school's game, for an alumni group, a dorm or a tailgate.
  • Bowl games and the playoff, when people who don't follow college football still tune in.
  • A big Saturday: make one board per game, or one for the marquee game of the day.

A few tips

  • Make the board a few days ahead, so people have time to claim squares before Saturday.
  • College football can run long. Tell your group when the numbers will be drawn and how overtime is handled.
  • The payout calculator works out the pot and what each quarter pays.
  • Play for fun and follow the laws and rules that apply where you live and where you play.

Common questions

Can I make a squares board for a college football game?

Yes. On the create page choose College, then Football, and pick the game from the list of upcoming games. Both teams, their colors, the stadium and the kickoff time are filled in. You can also type the two teams yourself.

Does college football squares work the same as NFL squares?

Yes. A 10 by 10 grid, random numbers drawn once the squares are claimed, and the last digit of each team's score after every quarter picks the winning square. Only the teams change.

Does college football have live scoring on SquaresBets?

Not yet. Live scoring currently works for NFL games. For college football the host types in the score after each quarter, which takes a few seconds. We are working on adding live scoring for more leagues.

Can I run squares for a rivalry game, a bowl game or the playoff?

Yes, any game on the schedule, from a Saturday rivalry to a bowl game or a playoff game. If a game isn't in the list yet, choose the two teams yourself and set up the board the same way.

Is it free?

Making a board and running it by hand is free, and players don't need an account or an app.
